Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is the oldest holiday we as American’s celebrate.  We can trace its roots all the way back to 1621 in Plymouth where present day Massachusetts is.  There was a celebration because of a good harvest.  That’s where it all began.  However, the practice of holding an annual harvest festival did not truly catch on until the late 1660’s.  Boca Raton Pawn.

Proclamations about Thanksgiving were given by leaders like George Washington, John Hancock, and congress.  They thanked God for giving them such favorable conditions.  In 1789 as president, George Washington finally made Thanksgiving a national holiday.  He called it “a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favours of Almighty God.”

Today, Thanksgiving is celebrated by all nationalities and religions, as long as you are American or Canadian.  It is a true national holiday that brings us all together.  When you think back on how this country was started, we all really need to give thanks.

In the US, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the 4th Thursday of every November.  Traditionally families will gather around and have a large feast, usually with Turkey being the main attraction.  Other traditional Thanksgiving foods include stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, and cranberry sauce.  It is a meal generally eaten earlier in the day than normal dinner, but later than lunch.  The day before Thanksgiving is the busiest travel day of the year.
