The History of Black Friday
With only a few short days before Black Friday I found myself wondering, what is the history of Black Friday? Where did it come from? Why do so many people wake up at 3 AM just to shop? Do you really get better deals?
According to Wikipedia the origin of the term Black Friday goes back over 50 years when retailers noticed the biggest shopping day of the year came on the day after Thanksgiving. It represents the “official” first day of holiday shopping.
In the 19th and 20th century many large department stores sponsored the Thanksgiving Day parade. There was an unwritten rule that they wouldn’t start advertising for holiday shopping until after the parade. This is what sparked Black Friday.
Today, most large stores offer huge discounts on many popular items like TV’s and appliances. It seems like Black Friday starts earlier and earlier each year, with some stores even opening up on Thanksgiving .
Are you going to join the rush this holiday season?
