The History of Cyber Monday
Cyber Monday is an attempt by online retailers to take advantage of the increase in consumer spending during the Thanksgiving weekend. For whatever reason, consumers do the majority of their holiday shopping on Black Friday through Cyber Monday. Cyber Monday is the Monday after Black Friday.
Cyber Monday was started in 2005 by “shop.org” when they used the term Cyber Monday in a press release. Since then the Monday after Thanksgiving has become known as Cyber Monday.
Like Black Friday, Cyber Monday features extreme sales and discounts by online retailers instead of brick and mortar locations. The idea is to give online stores a chance to sell large volumes of merchandise and give consumers a great deal.
In 2011, Cyber Monday sales reached $1.251 billion world wide. That is a significant percent of total sales for companies that use Cyber Monday as a marketing tool.
