Meteor Fragments in Winter Olympic Gold Boca Raton
On February 15th, 2014 the lucky winners who will receive an Olympic Gold Boca Raton medal will also have something extra: Russian meteor fragments! The famous meteorite that exploded over in Chelyabinsk will have its pieces placed into the medals given out one year after that moment.
The Chelyabinsk region culture minister Alexei Betekhtin made a statement and said, “We will hand out our medals to all the athletes who will win gold on that day, because both the meteorite strike and the Olympic Games are the global events.” Winning an Olympic gold medal is a huge accomplishment because it shows that those winners worked and trained hard enough and sacrificed their lifetime to win such a thing. By adding a piece of history, the famous meteor, it makes the medals all that more special and priceless.
There are seven sets of medals that will be offered in February: the men’s 1500 meter speed skating, the women’s 1,000m and men’s 1,500 short track, the women’s cross-country skiing relay, the men’s K-125 ski jump, the women’s super giant slalom, and men’s skeleton events.
When those medals are shown after the closing of the Olympics, the select athletes will be able to share the piece of information of what’s inside their medals. How interesting is that?
