For many people, buying a diamond is a new and scary experience. Scary because not many people know exactly what to look for in a diamond and they end up paying a lot of money for a stone with poor quality. In most cases, costumers go home with a diamond with less quality from what they thought they paid for. That is why we will try to make this process a bit easier for those who are looking to buy a diamond but are not sure what to look for.

The most important characteristics on a diamond are what it’s called the “Four C’s”. The Four C’s are Color, Clarity, Cut and Carat Weight. Today, we will talk about Clarity. Clarity is a measure of the number and size of the tiny imperfections that occur in almost all diamonds. Out of the Four C’s, clarity is the easiest to understand and according to experts, has the least impact on a diamond’s appearance. Clarity refers to the tiny natural imperfection found in most diamonds. These imperfections are called blemishes and inclusions, among others. Therefore, diamonds with less and the smallest imperfections are going to have the highest clarity grades.

Diamond clarity grading is divided in groups.

FL, IF –  Flawless, Internal Flawless – No internal or external imperfections. Internally Flawless: No internal imperfections. Finding a diamond with any of these two characteristics is very difficult.

VVS1, VVS2 – Very, Very Slightly Included – Very difficult to see imperfections under 10x magnification.

VS1,VS2 – Very Slightly Included – Imperfections are not typically visible to the unaided eye. These diamonds are less expensive compared to VVS1, VVS2 diamonds, because is a bit easier  to see imperfections under 10x magnification.

SI1,SI2 – Slightly Included – Imperfections are noticeable under 10x magnification, and may be visible with the unaided eye.

I1,I2,I3 – Included – Inclusions are obvious under 10x magnification which may affect the transparency and brilliance of the stone.

Now that you learned about diamond clarity, be sure to always be aware of the differences in clarity between the stones you are looking to buy. If you have to, ask the sales person for a magnifier loupe. Remember that the easier you find imperfections in the diamond, it will have a lower grade. If you have these tips in mind, you will have a much higher chance to purchase a better quality diamond and live happily ever after…
