Two indistinguishable gems that November Baby Birthstones Boca Raton call their own are Topaz and Citrine. Out of all 12 months, October, November and December are the 3 months that have two birthstones each. Though for all our Scorpio’s out there,  it’s hard from first glance to tell the difference between the two November birthstones. The real question is which one is more yellow and which one is more orange? We’re here to clear the air in the birthstone debacle starting with the some fun facts of these two gems.

Pure Topaz is in fact, transparent but becomes tinted in color by impurities. There are a few different types of Topaz: Orange, Imperial, Blue and Mystic. Out of the 5 types of Topaz, Orange Topaz is the November birthstone with it’s distinctive deep orange and amber coloring. For the other types of Topaz colors, Imperial is pink-orange. Blue is typically, colorless, gray or pale yellow and blue material is heat treated and irradiated to produce a more desired darker blue. And last but not least, Mystic is the colorless topaz which has been artificially coated giving it the desired rainbow effect.

Since so many people through time have confused Topaz with Citrine for ages, that is how both became classified as the November birthstones in our Western society. Citrine isn’t nearly as orange as Topaz but known to be much more golden yellow hues of color like a quartz.  In fact, Citrine is a member of the large quartz family.Even now, jewellery enthusiasts with no specialist knowledge may be astounded when you tell them that  their ‘gold topaz’ is a citrine, in other words not a topaz at all, but quartz.

People have come to know and love Citrine under the name of ‘golden Topaz’. The name is derived from the colour – the yellow of the lemon. There are not many yellow gemstones in the world of jewels. A diamond or a sapphire may be yellow – those will be expensive for the average person so, Citrine is a stunning substitution. They look absolutely perfect when paired with white diamonds as seen below with one of our items in store.

So what is it that constitutes the difference between the real topaz and the citrine? A fluorine aluminium silicate in chemical terms, the topaz is considerably harder and heavier than quartz, and it has a higher refractive index, which endows it with more fire when the colour is good. So much beauty from both of these gems, is hard to choose a favorite.
