When you think Swatch watch, you think cheap reliable every day watch right? You think of a watch you can beat up that will keep on working until the end of time. Well did you know the Swatch Group owns Breguet, Harry Winston, and Omega among others? So technically when you’re wearing your $50,000 Breguet, you’re wearing a $50,000 Swatch (kind of). So it shouldn’t come as a surprise to you that a “Superlot” of Swatch watches going to auction is expected to fetch $1 million. Who am I kidding, of course that comes as a surprise. When I read that I almost fell off my chair! I don’t care how many watches are in this “Superlot”, $1 million of Swatch watches is a lot. That is a huge lot to sell watches Boca Raton.
Included in the lot are prototypes, limited edition, and artwork relating to Swatch watches. The entire lot will be auctioned off by famous auction house Sotheby’s. There are a total of 5,800 pieces in the lot formally named “Swatch and Art from the Dunkel Collection”. The collection spans over 25 years by Paul Dunkel, a European collector. Sotheby’s has the unofficial estimate set at $1.3 million.
“Collecting both the Swatch and the artworks is like having an intriguing marriage that works perfectly well, affording people the luxury of admiring art objects on their wrists,” Dunkel said. “What I enjoy the most about Swatch is that everybody can relate to it; regardless of age, origin, color, culture, job and taste, most of us have had a Swatch in our lives.”
Below are some of the pieces included in the lot scheduled for April 7th.
Swatch-mania: American graffiti artist Keith Haring (1958–1990) came into prominence in the New York art scene in the 1980s. The complete set of four limited edition Keith Haring Swatch watches, launched in 1986, include “Modele Avec Personnages,” “Serpent,” “Milles Pattes” and “Blanc sur Noir,” and are accompanied by a poster and original drawing.
Also known as “Kiki Picasso,” French painter and designer Christian Chapiron was the first artist featured in a Swatch Art Special, and this example launched in 1985 features a portrait of his wife and is accompanied by a poster. Limited to only 140 pieces, it’s considered one of the most sought-after special edition Swatches.
Very limited quantities of Swatch prototypes exist in the market, which places them among the rarest of Swatch collectibles, and Dunkel’s collection encompasses some of the most unique Swatch prototypes from the early 1980s, Sotheby’s said.
