Jewelry stores and watch shops are very often the target for crooks. The merchandise is small, valuable, and easy to move. Also, it is very often displayed in glass display cases that are easy to break. A couple robbers working in tandem could steal millions of dollars worth of product in minutes and be off on foot. In New York City, it is especially easy because displays in stores are close to the exit and close to the street. This means once the items are stolen they can blend in with the rest of the crowded street and make it almost impossible for law enforcement to catch them. This is exactly what happened this week at Tourneau’s Madison Avenue Rolex shop. Three armed robbers walked in, broke the glass cases, and made off with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of Rolex Boca Raton watches.
On May 12th, in the middle of the afternoon three men dressed in suits entered Tourneau. When they came in, one of the three shot a gun into the ground to show they mean business and the other two took sledge hammers to the cases. They didn’t raise any red flags because they were dressed in suits which is why they were allowed in. After the robbers started on their getaway, police officers were notified and chased them down. They were pursued while running through midtown Manhattan. One of the suspects was actually caught. He had a duffle bag full of Rolex watches that probably slowed him down. The other two ran into a Bloomingdale’s and eventually got onto the subway and escaped. All of the watches seized have been entered as evidence in the case.
