So, as most of you guys know, the Apple Watch has been on the market for a couple months now. And many people including myself are wondering what will happen to other watch companies. Will people start wearing and buying the Apple watch instead of a Rolex? Or will they wear it instead of their Michael Kors? How has the Apple Watch been selling anyway? Do people even like it? Sell Watches Boca Raton.
I received my Apple Watch almost two weeks ago, so as someone who loves watches and always wore a Rolex, I’ll tell you what I think will happen with the Apple Watch and more specifically to businesses they want to compete with. After all, the wrist is valuable real estate. You can wear multiple necklaces on your neck, rings on your fingers, earrings in your ear, but you can only wear one watch. So who will win? Before I tell you let’s recap last week real quick.
Last week I reviewed a Chanel Classic Flap. I told you how it came to be and some fun facts about the bag you might not have known before, like what that little zippered pocket in the flap is for. So first I want to talk about the Apple Watch and what it does. Where I think Apple succeeded and others didn’t is they really made their smart watch a watch first. When you look at it, it doesn’t look like a computer on a bracelet, it looks like a watch. They kept the crown (granted it’s not in the normal place), but you can tell, OK this is a watch. And they made sure the first thing you see when you raise your wrist is the time. You can customize the display to the analog or digital, but keeping it analog makes it seem even more like a real watch. But after that, it’s main function is really to be an extension of your phone. It’s an added convenience of not having to take your phone out of your pocket every time you get a text, email, phone call, notification, etc. As we become more connected we get more notifications, and as petty as it sounds, constantly removing your phone from your pocket is annoying over time. Glancing down at your wrist is much more convenient. Can you text and call from it? Sure, but that’s not the main objective. The main thing the watch does is keep you more connected with the world around you.
Now, do I think the Apple Watch will put watch companies out of business? Maybe. And I say maybe because I think it will definitely hurt certain brands. The style combined with the convenience of the Apple Watch is undeniable. But I also think it won’t have an effect on others. First, let’s look at the price point. Unless you are one of the rare few to buy the gold Apple Watch Edition, the price point is anywhere between $350-$1,000. If you look around the watch market similar priced watches are sold by brands like Michael Kors, Seiko, etc. I think the Apple Watch is going to have a huge impact on these brands. Imagine you’re a 25 year old buying your first watch. You start looking around and narrow it down between an Apple Watch and a Seiko. Do you want the watch that tells the time and maybe has a few other functions or do you want to spend your hard earned $500 on something that can freaking text! It’s a no brainer answer to me, especially considering the generation. Technology is incredibly important to millennials and so is keeping in touch. I think the Apple Watch will severely hurt the mid-range fashion watch brands.
Now, as far as the Apple Watch vs luxury Swiss Brands like Rolex and Audemars, I think it will have little to no effect. We’ve seen technology already try to kill the mechanical watch. The quartz watch, for example, keeps better time then any mechanical watch, yet watch connoisseurs continue to dish out tens of thousands of dollars for mechanical watches. Why? Because there is something special about knowing the device you wear to keep time was made with hours of hard work and is comprised of tiny gears that all rotate together in perfect harmony to keep time. Also, the price points are different. You can’t buy a new Rolex these days for less than $5,000. The Apple Watch will be a toy for those who collect luxury watches. Will they wear it? Sure it’s convenient and fun to play with, but there’s nothing like walking into a room with a Rolex on your wrist. That simply won’t change overnight.
The Apple Watch, according to Tim Cook, has been selling great. And I’m sure it has I have no reason to doubt him. Consumers seem to like the watch a lot and I think it will definitely hurt mid-range watch brands. Given the choice, the Apple Watch seems like an easy decision when compared to a Michael Kors. But Rolex, Audemars, and other high end luxury Swiss brands will be OK. They have weathered the storm in the past and were better off for it. I think the same will be true this time around.
