Checking the time on an Android inspired Google watch.

Google has decided to get in on the “smart watch” game.  They just introduced plans to help develop watches that will run the Android operating system.  They are partnering with fashion, technology, and electronics companies to design the watch.  They are also working on other “wearable” technology.  They are calling the project “Android Wear” and it is open to software engineers to help make apps for the watches.  Would you sell watches Boca Raton and buy a smart watch?  Google thinks you will.

The news of Android Wear comes before rumored announcements by rival Apple.  For years now, it has been assumed that Apple will introduce some sort of wearable technology.  Even their CEO Tim Cook has said that new “product categories” will be introduced later this year.  It’s always good to get out ahead of your competition and that’s exactly what Google is doing.  A video on Google’s blog showed people talking into their watches to check sports scores, send text messages, and control music.

LG Electronics also announced that they will start selling their first smart watch, the G Watch, in the second quarter.  The biggest announcement came from Fossil Inc who said they are working with Google on wearable devises.  This is huge because until now, smart watches were designed and sold by technology companies.  But if those companies can partner with companies in the fashion industry they can target a broader market.

There is big speculation that a smart watch is the next big thing in the technology world.  Just as the smart phone and tablet have started to replace traditional computers, the smart watch may start to replace those phones and tablets.  Samsung was the first big technology company to roll out a smart watch, with mixed results.  But the fact that Google has decided to put a lot of time and energy into this project gives validation that it really is a category and not a fad.
