Ever heard of Richard Mille? Most of us can look, but not touch. The average cost for a Richard Mille watch is in the 6-digit range. Think this is a bit drastic? By now we should of all heard about the all sapphire crystal RM line by Richard Mille. The original model was a whopping $1,650,000! The average American doesn’t see that kind of money in a lifetime. So what makes these watches so expensive?
If you are a watch fanatic you might know of a little something called sapphire crystal. Apple is rumored to be using sapphire crystal glass instead of Gorilla glass because of its incredible durability. Sapphire crystal is normally produced in a round form, but the RM model watches are custom designed sapphire crystal which adds to the overall cost. The crystal is not elastic what so ever so during the cutting phase machining becomes very complex. These watches are completely transparent and use sapphire crystal everywhere except on the case back of the watch. The RM 56 retailed for $1,650,000 and then the RM 56-01 went up to $1,950,000!
Coming out with a brand that is this high in value is shocking, and the fact the price continually increases seems absurd! When you think of the high quality materials used and the machinery that goes in to producing just one watch is astounding. It takes approximately 400 hours of machining just for movement bridges, the watch needs 40 continuous days of work to be finished! Specialized CNC cutting machines are used for the sapphire crystal since it is a complicated cut.
The new RM 56-02 was specifically made for professional tennis player Rafael Nadal. Only 10 watches were produced in this collection, that is over 4,000 hours of work! The synthetic sapphire crystal wraps around every edge of the watch, and the case back is grade 5 titanium. Believe it or not, Richard Mille gave an interview on CNBC on July 15th 2014 stating that every watch in the RM 56-02 collection was sold. The profit according to Forbes is projected to be over $20,000,000. So what is this watch retailing for exactly? $2,020,000!!! Can you believe that!
The exterior design isn’t the only crazy part about this watch, the tourbillon movement consists of a cable suspension within the transparent sapphire. The cable measures less than 0.4 mm. Our favorite part of this watch is that the movement can be seen through the front glass, like many special edition watches such as Omega a skeletal front on a watch can add value tremendously. The characteristic that makes the RM line so distinct is the bezel, lugs and sides are all transparent as well, this watch is completely see through.
