President Dwight D. Eisenhower Rolex Watch up for Auction
Like many other presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower took a liking to the Rolex watch brand. This is a familiar watch to American politicians, it was seen on John F. Kennedy’s wrist back in the 1960s. Given to him by the infamous Marilyn Monroe.
Before presidency Eisenhower was awarded with an 18k yellow gold Oyster Perpetual Rolex Ref. 6305 after planning D-Day and being a 5 star general. The watch was given to him in 1951 and had DDE inscribed on the case back of the watch. Eisenhower can be seen wearing the watch on the cover of Life magazine of July 1952. After Ike’s death in 1969 the Rolex was bequeathed to his army colleague Sgt. John Moaney.
After Moaney’s death, his widow acquired the watch and the Raleigh DeGeer Amyx Collection then was given the watch. The Amyx Collection is an assemblage of historic Americana, presidential and military relics. Moaney’s widow was a cook for the president and his wife, Mami Eisenhower.
Now the RR Auction in Boston is selling the oyster model Rolex, and the rest of the Raleigh DeGeer Amyx Collection. The watch is expected to sell for at least $1 million!
RR Auction released an official statement on the watch saying, “The overall condition of the watch is excellent original, being in good running order, having minor band repairs, some normal refinishing of case and bracelet surfaces,” RR Auction said. “The case back retains its fine engraving with light wear, thanks in part to the preservation noted by the man who received the watch from the president.”
Some details about this Rolex has an 18k yellow gold jubilee bracelet, fluted 18k yellow gold bezel and silver dial with gold stick markers. The back of the watch has his 5-star emblem on the back, followed by DDE and “12-19-1950.” If you want to take part in this auction, register at RRAuction.com.
