Diamonds Boca Raton
As the technology for lab created diamonds improves it poses all sorts of questions. How close to the real thing do the diamonds look? Aren’t they in fact real diamonds, just made in a lab? How can I be sure I’m buying a mined diamond rather than a lab created one? These are all questions we are going to have to figure out sooner than later. Companies like Gemesis Diamond Company are mass producing lab created diamonds and selling them for much less than their mined counterparts. For now, everything they sell is represented accordingly, as lab created diamonds. But what happens when a company starts manufacturing diamonds but tells buyers they are mined? It will happen sooner than later. Lab created diamonds Boca Raton are great for the consumer on a budget, but how long before we are buying lab created diamonds we thought were real?
There are huge testing concerns when it comes to lab diamonds. They are able to pass the naked eye, and even the jewelers eye as natural mined diamonds, and this poses many ethical questions. What happens when they are sold as natural diamonds and introduced to the market as such? In May 2012, this almost happened. The IGI lab in Antwerp, Belgium got a parcel of 1,000 stones marked as “natural” and priced as if they were. However, after they were tested it turned out about a third of them were lab created! And they were of the highest quality, with clarity ratings VVS to VS. Even more troubling is IGI determined that inclusions and clouds inside the stones were intentionally introduced for the sole purpose of defrauding the potential customer. And what makes this story even more scary is global diamond expert Chaim Even-Zohar mentioned that the 1,000 that were tested came from an even bigger lot of stones, and that thousands of lab created diamonds are probably floating around in the market, being represented as natural.
Gemesis, one of the largest producers of lab created diamonds, stands by their ethical statement: “Full disclosure has been and will continue to be one of our very basic tenants,” Lux said in October. “We inscribe all of our diamonds to ensure they are unmistakably Gemesis, and every diamond on our website carries a PDF certificate that can be viewed immediately.” However, according to GIA lab grown diamonds can now achieve a level of comparable quality to natural mined diamonds. And that telling the difference between the two can be nearly impossible. So, even though Gemesis is engraving their stones and providing a PDF certificate, doesn’t mean that other companies will be so honest. In fact, if the diamonds are that close together in quality, it is only a matter of time before they start taking over the market.
Lab created diamonds should be cheap right? No one had to mine them, ship them, cut them, etc. However, lab diamonds aren’t that much less than their natural counterparts. In fact, selling them as a less expensive option isn’t even a marketing strategy by Gemesis. “These diamonds are never going to be cheap to produce because we’re re-creating what was done in nature, and it has to be done the same way for a consumer to appreciate the beauty that comes out,” Lux said. “We can’t use price as the only offering to the customer and we haven’t had to do that anyway because people now recognize multiple benefits when looking at our diamonds – the process is far more energy-efficient that what it takes to move tonnes of earth, and the origin of each diamond is absolutely known.” “Gemesis consumers know they come away with a diamond – it’s not a question that it is a diamond and that it is conflict-free. They also have the assurance of a diamond certificate, our generous return policy, eco-friendly comfort and an attractive price. Ultimately, it’s hard for someone to sit there and say they disagree with all those points.”
Gemesis Diamond Company seems to be in flux at the moment. And while their survival is not guaranteed, the survival of lab created diamonds is. As long as there is a demand for these stones there will be companies manufacturing them.
