I’ve been reading a lot of articles recently saying millennial’s aren’t buying handbags or that handbag sales in general are down.  They have statistics to back it up, interviews with millennial’s, and retail businesses that agree: luxury handbag sales have taken a hit.  However, when you dive a bit deeper, it doesn’t necessarily tell the whole story.  Sure, the craze with Michael Kors has kind of worn off lately but is Michael Kors really a luxury handbag?  The statistics show that sales of MK bags are down at department stores like Macy’s and Nordstrom.  But I wouldn’t consider MK a luxury handbag.  Their average bag has a retail price between $150-$500 where as a true luxury brand like Chanel has prices upwards of $5,000 and more.  And what I found out is high end luxury brands like Chanel or Louis Vuitton are actually doing extremely well, selling more bags every year than they did the year before.  Below are some examples of the brands millennial’s ARE buying.

The Louis Vuitton Artsy may have overtaken the Neverfull as the most popular Louis Vuitton handbag at the moment.  It it a large bag, like the Neverfull, but is not as open feeling.  Also it only has one strap and acts more like a shoulder bag than a tote.  However, the strap is much larger and is much more comfortable to wear.  You can also do like above and wear the bag on your arm.  It has pockets and compartments galore inside and many women are giving up their Neverfull for the more comfortable and practical Artsy.

The Chanel Kisslock Clutch has exploded onto the scene in recent years.  Yes it’s a small bag, yes it does not have a strap, and yes it looks simple.  But that’s what’s amazing about it.  It’s such a simple design and concept that it works.  Wear it for a night out and it just adds that little extra to your outfit.  Millennial’s love it because it’s discreet.  Go to your local Chanel boutique and you won’t even find it for sale, most stores are sold out.

Ah yes, the classic Chanel Double Flap.  This may be the most recognizable handbag in the world.  Women dream of owning this bag since they were little girls.  It’s the perfect size, shape, and design.  In a world of cross body bags, this bag is Queen, especially in black lambskin.

So when people say handbag sales are down, understand what they mean.  Yes bags like Michael Kors and Coach have seen sales decline.  But those bags are not representative of the high end luxury bag market.  If you really want to see how high end designer bags are doing look at Louis Vuitton, look at Chanel, even look at Hermes.  They will tell you the whole story.
