Turn Your Clutter into Cash: the Top 4 Items to Sell at a Pawn Shop

Turn Your Clutter into Cash: the Top 4 Items to Sell at a Pawn Shop

Feeling a bit overwhelmed by all of your clutter? It may be time to have a complete clean sweep of your home. But before you go setting up a garage sale or just tossing your unwanted items in the trash, take a second look at them, they may be worth a few bucks. When you’re going through your attic or basement, take a minute to carefully inspect everything you are looking to get rid of. Sometimes you may just find what some to consider a rare jewel in the mix, something you may want to pawn for quick
cash. Here are a few things you should look out for.

1) Musical instruments

pawn music instrumentA good, working instrument, like a drum set or trumpet, is almost a guarantee sell at most pawn shops if you present it right. Make sure whatever you bring in is nice and clean – no dust, dirt or smudges anywhere in sight. Tighten any loose parts and collect all assembly pieces that there might be (drumsticks, screws, cases etc.). Study up a little on your item – what is the brand name? How old is it? How much did you originally pay for it? But, most importantly you need to walk into that pawn shop with confidence, knowing exactly how much you want for your piece.

2) Computer Parts

pawn computer partsKeep in mind, some pawn shops don’t like to purchase computer equipment, but if yours does, then why not try to sell one to them? If you decide to sell a computer or computer parts to a pawn shop, make sure it’s not one that you use regularly – you want to sell things that are just sitting around collecting dust and getting in the way. For example, if you have an old printer or scanner that you haven’t used in a year or two and you’ve already replaced with a new one, you might want to go ahead and part with it. Before you head into the shop, though, you’ll want to know the what the product is currently selling for. So, find the product number and Google it. Check out what your item is going for on eBay and other discount websites and expect to make about half of what the item is priced online. Once you’ve done this, wipe it clean, collect any manuals, cords, or anything else that came with it and pack it up in the box it originally came in (if you have it).

3) TVs

pawn tv setTVs are a big seller at pawn shops, but you only want to take it in if it’s relatively new or a recent model. When you take it in to sell, you should make sure, like everything else, it’s nice and clean and that you have the remote control and paperwork that originally came with it. You should also make sure it actually works before you try to get money for it, too. Like the computer equipment, you’ll want to check online to see how much your television is selling for in used markets. You can easily find this by typing the model number in Google. Oh, and having a friend handy wouldn’t be a bad idea – TVs can be pretty heavy!

4) Jewelry

pawn jewelryFirst off, if the jewelry you are considering getting rid of has any marital, familial or sentimental value, DON’T SELL IT. Time and time again people take in these items and a few days later are overcome with regret – don’t be that person! Pawn shops buy any type of jewelry: bracelets, earrings, necklaces, rings. Don’t bring in plastic jewelry though, save that for your garage sale. Shops will want to stick with diamonds, silver, gold, gold plate, etc. If you know that your local pawn shop buys gold, do your research before selling to them so that you know that you’re getting the right amount of money for it. Just type “scrap gold” into a search engine and you can easily find sites that will help you with pricing. Or call us and get accurate, up to the minute figures!

With the right pieces and preparation, you can take your old “junk” and make some serious cash off of it. For all you know, that old figurine you’re using as a paperweight could be one hundred years old and worth ten times what you paid for it!
