Boca Pawn – The History of Patek Philippe
Patek Philippe, the world’s most prestigious watch company, was founded in in 1851. For over 150 years Patek Philippe has been the gold standard for luxury Swiss watches. Boca Pawn explores the history of the maker of the most beautiful timepieces ever made.
Antoni Patek first started making pocket watches all the way back in 1839. It wasn’t until 1845 that he teamed with French watchmaker Adrien Philippe before founding the company in 1851.
Patek Philippe invented the perpetual calendar, split seconds hand, chronograph, and minute repeater.
Patek Philippe is known for the manufacturing of its own watch parts. A lot of high end watch companies make some of their own parts combined with parts from other companies. What makes Patek so special is, for the most part, they use all of their own parts.
Patek Philippe is also known for setting records for expensive watches at auctions. In 2008, a platinum Patek Philippe Tourbillion wristwatch sold for $1.49 million! It is not uncommon for some of their most manufactured watches to retail for more than $20,000.
Patek Philippe makes simple watches that just have an hour and minute functions to some of the most complicated in the world. Some of their most complicated watches have more than 20 functions. Their watches are more engineering displays than actual watches.
Patek Philippe watches tend to hold their value more than any other company. They truly do last a lifetime.
