Today at iPad Boca Raton Pawn we are comparing the newly introduced iPad mini to the Google Nexus 7. While Apple already had a tablet on the market, this is the first time they are diving into the “smaller” tablet market. Let’s see how the mini stacks up to the Nexus 7.
Size
First let’s look at the size of both. The mini and Nexus 7 are both in the same class which means they are relatively similar in size. The iPad mini measures 7.87″ x 5.30″ while the Nexus 7 measure 7.81″ x 4.72″. For all intensive purposes they are the same height but the iPad mini is a bit wider. Also the iPad mini is .28″ thin vs .41″. The iPad mini is smaller and thinner than the Nexus with a bigger screen.
Weight
The iPad mini is significantly lighter than the Nexus 7. The iPad weighs 307 grams while the Nexus is 340 grams.
Display
While the iPad mini has a bigger screen (7.9″ compared to 7.0″) the Nexus 7 actually has better resolution. The Nexus has 216 pixels per inch while the iPad only has 163. Keep in mind the iPad mini does NOT have the “retina” display.
Processor
One of the big qualms with the iPad mini is houses the A5 chip that the iPad 2 uses. Clearly outdated technology that only has an output of 1 GHz. The Nexus 7 has a 1.3 GHz Nvidia Tegra 3 chip making it significantly faster.
Storage
The iPad mini comes in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB which gives you much more storage than the 8GB and 16GB offered by Google. Rumors are the updated Nexus will offer bigger storage but for now it’s way behind.
Wireless
The Google Nexus 7 only offers internet with a wireless connection while the iPad mini can connect via Wi-Fi or 3G/LTE. While many places these days offer Wi-Fi you can’t take the Nexus on the road.
Camera
The front facing camera on both devises is the same 1.2 MP but only the iPad mini offers a rear facing camera.
In conclusion, both devises have their advantages. However, it looks like the iPad mini scored more points than the Nexus 7. However, the iPad is almost $120 more than the Nexus 7 which begs the question. Which tablet will you buy? Either one looks like a good choice.
