7 Tips to Good Haggling

Money is tight these days, so you probably are looking to find a good deal on anything you spend your money on. Many places, like pawn shops, are up for haggling prices, but you have to go into this knowing exactly what you’re doing. Here are some tips to help you out as you try to get a good bargain on a product.

7 Tips to Good Haggling

  1. Stop caring what people think of you. Don’t hesitate from haggling just because you don’t want to seem cheap or argumentative. Honestly, you probably won’t ever see these people again, so stop worrying about your self-esteem. Swallow your fear and jump right in.
  2. Pick your battles wisely. Know what stores will haggle and which products to haggle on and don’t waste your time going back and froth with someone over a couple of bucks.
  3. Do your research. Go online and look up prices on the product you want – this will give you a starting point when you head out to buy the product. You can even print out the product description and price to show the salesperson if they think you’re bluffing about how much you saw the product for.
  4. Set your standards high…at first. Figure out the price that you consider being a great deal, a good deal, a mediocre deal, and no deal. When you begin to negotiate, you’ll start with your “great deal” price and the seller will probably come back with a mediocre offer. Your goal is to haggle your way to a good deal, or even better, a great deal.
  5. Show hesitation about buying. Even if the product is exactly what you’re looking for, you cant let the seller know it. Otherwise, they will have the upper hand. Let them know you’re interested, but that if the price isn’t right, you can live without it. Aim for an awkward silence – this will make the seller nervous leading him to drop the price even further. Emphasize the shortcomings of the product and look for any flaws it may have, but remember to be respectful so you aren’t offending the seller.
  6. Be prepared to walk away. Don’t be afraid to walk out of the store. Chances are, the salesperson will call you back in with a better deal. If you’re only offered a mediocre deal, let them know you want to keep shopping around, then go to other sellers to find different deals.
  7. Accept the offer when the price is right. If you said you’d buy it for $100 and they offer it to you for $100, don’t push your luck. Don’t turn this into some long negotiation when you actually got the deal you wanted.
