Baselworld 2013, New Watches: Rolex Boca Raton

Rolex Boca Raton

Today, Rolex introduced six new watches at Baselworld 2013.  The six watches include a platinum Daytona, GMT II Ceramic with a two colored bezel, stainless steel Yachtmaster II, six variations of the Day-Date on leather, a “Serti” president, and a ladies Pearlmaster.  All over the world there is always a huge debate whether Rolex Boca Raton did a good job with the new watches or failed miserably.  Let’s take a look at the 3 watches making the most noise.

platinum daytona 116506

First, is the Platinum Daytona.  This year marks 50 years since the word Daytona was added to the Cosmograph watch.  They celebrated by introducing a Daytona available in Platinum.  The Daytona has never been available as a platinum watch in the past.  They had steel versions, two tone versions, yellow, white, and even rose gold versions.  I applaud the fact that Rolex did introduce a platinum version, ref: 116506.  However, they put a blue glacier dial with a brown ceramic bezel.  When looking at the watch it just doesn’t match.  They say to wear brown shoes when wearing a blue suit but this blue and brown just doesn’t look good together.  I wish the dial / bezel combo was a differnt color.  Overall it’s a cool watch but not what I was expecting.

GMT II 116710BLNR

Second, is the GMT II Ceramic with the black and blue dial.  Just like GMT’s in the past, this will sure to earn a nickname.  The blue and red bezel was the Pepsi, black and red was Coke.  The first thing I think of when I think black and blue is a bruise!  The bezel is created with a patented design process invented by Rolex.  Until now, there have been no two tone colored ceramic bezels in the watch world.  This is truly an innovation.  In my opinion the watch looks great.  I think going with a new color combo was the right choice.  No sense in going back in time to blue and red or black and red.

yachtmaster II 116680

Finally, the all stainless steel version of the Yachtmaster II.  I really never expected this watch to get made.  First, the white gold version looks almost identical to this model but for thousands of dollars more.  Hard to believe there will be many sales of the white gold model after this 116680 is introduced.  But I do love it!  It’s a 44mm stainless steel sport model Rolex with a polished center bracelet.  This watch is going to fly off the shelves.  Everyone has been begging for a bigger Rolex and here it is.  Estimated retail is anywhere from $10-$20,000.  I’m expecting around $13,000 or so.  Regardless of where it is priced, you can be sure no store will have one in stock.

Overall, I think Rolex did a good job at Baselworld 2013.  They added to their fancy watch collection with some new Day-Date models and a Pearlmaster.  The sport collection got a huge improvement with the steel Yacht II and the GMT II Black and Blue.   The verdict is still out on the Platinum Daytona.  Time will tell.
