We already talked about Color and Clarity. This time, we are learning a little about Cut. The cut of a diamond determines its brilliance. A diamond’s cut is crucial to the stone’s final beauty and value, and out of the Four C’s is probably the most complex to analyze. The beauty of a diamond depends more on cut than any other factor and diamond cut has three primary effects on appearance: Brilliance, Fire and Scintillation. Therefore, the diamond cut that brings more sparkle to a diamond will have a better grade.
The diamond cut grade is divided in five groups: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor. Depending in which group your diamonds falls into, the price changes drastically. Let’s learn a little more about each group.
Excellent – This diamond cut will have the maximum fire and brilliance and will reflect nearly all the light that comes enters the diamond, giving it a great sparkle.
Very Good – Reflects most of the light that enters the diamond. It appears very similar to Excellent Cut, but for a lower price.
Good – Has an excellent value compared to the higher cut grades. Reflects a majority of the light that enters the diamond.
Fair – This diamond cut grade allows much of the light that enters the diamond to escape from side and bottom, reducing fire and brilliance.
Poor – Allows most of the light entering the diamond to escape from the sides or bottom. Stone is noticeable dull and without fire, even without the use of a magnifier.
Now that you learned a little more about color, clarity and cut, you will feel more confident buying a good quality diamond for the right price. Don’t be afraid to ask questions when buying a diamond, the more you ask and look at the stone, more you will understand the pricing and quality of it.
