When we talk about diamond color grading, we are actually talking about the lack of color. That means, the diamond that is white, or has no color will receive higher quality grades than those with visible color. To grade a diamond by color, specialists use a color grading chart which goes from D to Z. A color grade of D is the highest possible, while Z is the lowest. Color is considered the second most important characteristic when  selecting a diamond.

Diamond Color Scale:

D-E-F – Colorless – Even though there is a minor difference in color between, D,E and F diamonds color can be detected by an expert gemologist.

G-H-I-J – Near Colorless – G and H color are difficult to detect unless compared side-by-side against diamonds of better grades. I and J color are a little more noticeable but are considered a great value and may retail for half the price of a D diamond.

K-L-M – Faith Color – These three colors (usually a yellow tint) are more easily detected by the naked eye. A K diamond is often half the price of a G diamond, due to its perceptible color tint.

N-R – Very Light Color – Diamonds in the N-R color range have an easily seen yellow or brown tint, but are much less expensive than higher grades.

S-Z – Light Color – S and Z diamonds have noticeable color.

When shopping for a diamond, if you are looking for an excellent deal in a diamond with little or no noticeable color to the unaided eye, look for a near-colorless grade of G-I.
