Cartier was founded over 150 years ago in 1847. Louis-François Cartier founded Cartier in Paris after he took over the workshop of his master. Then in 1874, his son Alfred took over the company. But it wasnt’t until Alfred’s sons Louis and Pierre Jacques took over that the company really took off. They grew the company into a worldwide brand. Pawn Jewelry Boca Raton
In 1904 a Brazilian aviator named Alberto Santos-Dumont thought that flying with a pocket watch wasn’t practical. So they introduced a flat wristwatch with a square bezel. Santos-Dumont loved the watch and so did Cartier’s clients, and thus the “Santos” was born. It was the first wristwatch Cartier made for men.
Then, in 1907 Cartier made a deal with Edward Jaeger (of Jaeger Le-Coultre) to provide the watch movements in Cartier watches. At this time in the company they have already grown to have offices in many countries. They were becoming one of the most successful watch companies in the world. In 1912 the Baignoire and Tortue models were created. They are still in production today. And then in 1917, possibly the most popular watch design in the world was created, the Cartier Tank Francaise. It was designed by Louis Cartier and meant to be modeled after actual tanks on the Western Front.
After such a long history a Cartier exhibition is opening at a Washington museum. Remarkable Cartier pieces once owned by philanthropist and businesswoman Marjorie Merriweather Post, a devoted client of the brand, are on display for public viewing. The display opened last week and will go through Decemeber 31st at Hillwood Estate, Museum and Gardens in Washington. Post, who was born in 1887 and died in 1973, inherited the Postum Cereal Company at age 27 when her father died. The company later became General Food Corp.
“The exhibition of Post’s most important Cartier acquisitions offers a snapshot of the very time at which Cartier in the 1920s boldly embraced the modern sensibilities of the Art Deco period and attracted the interest of the world’s most visible and fashionable clientele,” said Liana Paredes, Hillwood’s director of collections and exhibition curator. Highlights of the exhibition include a brooch made of seven 17th century carved Mogul emeralds, weighing a total of 250 carats, as well as a 21-carat Colombian emerald that once had been set into a ring worn by the emperor of Mexico, Maximilian. An arrow-shaped brooch with dangling diamond tassels that Post used as a clasp for her pearl strands and a necklace made of amethyst, turquoise and diamonds set in platinum show how Cartier adhered to the latest fashions. Several Cartier pieces that Post donated to the Smithsonian Institute in 1964 also will be on display, such as an Indian-style necklace featuring 24 baroque-cut emerald drops.
Cartier continues to be one of the most influential jewelry companies in the world. This exhibit lets visitors go on a short journey through their history. It should be very cool to see these pieces.
