5 TIPS ON SPOTTING REAL GOLD JEWELRY
1. Look for noticeable discoloration. It is important to check for discoloration in areas that face constant friction (typically around the edges). If the gold seems to be wearing off and exposing a different metal beneath it, you probably have a piece of jewelry that is gold plated.
2. Hold a magnet up to the item. Gold is not a magnetic metal, so if it pulls towards, or sticks to the magnet, it’s fake. However, just because it doesn’t react to the magnet doesn’t mean it is real, considering non-magnetic metals are used in counterfeit pieces as well.
3. Drag your item across a surface. A black streak means your gold is not real, whereas a gold streak indicates your item is genuine. Keep in mind you do not have to do this in a rough manner because you don’t want to tarnish your jewelry if in the event it is actually gold.
4. Inspect the piece of jewelry for official markings. A stamp will indicate either fineness (1-999 or .1-.999) OR karat (10K, 14K, 18K, 22K or 24K). If you do not see any of these markings, grab a magnifying glass and you should spot it more easily. If not, you got a fake one on your hands.
Last but certainly not least,
5. The Nitric Acid Test. This is where the term “acid test” comes from, and is a great way to test your gold. However, due to the difficulty is acquiring the acid, and the inherent safety risks of doing this in your home, it may be best to leave this test to a jeweler. Though if you are daring and randomly have nitric acid readily available, this test takes mer minutes to perform. Place jewelry in a stainless steel bowl, drop a little bit of the acid on there and if it turns to a greenish color it is fake. If nothing happens to the gold piece of jewelry, you got a real one on your hands!
