Similar but Different: Sport Models Rolex Boca Raton
Rolex is the top selling luxury watch brand in the world. They sell dress watches, sport watches, and everything in between. Some of their sport watches can be worn for dress and vice versa. There is a Rolex for just about anybody. When it comes to Rolex sport models, many of them look the same. Unless you look closely some are very hard to tell apart. But they all have different functions and uses. Today I am going to compare the most popular sport model Rolex Boca Raton watches: the Submariner, GMT II, Explorer II, and Yachtmaster. Below are pictures of each one. They look pretty similar huh?
The Submariner is the most popular Rolex sport model. It is the “introductory” Rolex for men everywhere. It has an 40mm case which is the perfect size for a men’s watch. It’s only extra mechanical function besides telling the time is a date function. The main purpose of this watch is to go diving. It is water resistant up to 1,000 feet. This Rolex Submariner is reference 16610.
The Rolex GMT Master II looks very similar to the Submariner. It has a black dial and black bezel just like the Submariner. However, there are a few differences. First, it is not a diving watch so it is only water resistant to around 300 feet. Second, the bezel has 24-hour markings rather than minute markings. This is because the GMT has a two time zone function. If you look closely you will see a third hand that is green. This is the “home time” hour hand and is always set to your local time. The other small hour hand can easily jump from hour to hour to switch when traveling between time zones. The GMT also has a date function. It is reference number 116710.
The Rolex Explorer II is very similar to the GMT Master II. They actually have the exact same functions. The only major difference is the color of the bezel and functionality of the bezel. On the GMT you can rotate the bezel but on the Explorer it is fixed. Both have two time zone functions. The Explorer watch has “brushed center links” as compared to “polished center links” on the GMT. This makes it look a bit more like a tool watch than a bling watch. It is reference number 16570.
Finally is the Rolex Yachtmaster. This is the most expensive of the group because of the platinum bezel and dial. All 4 watches have stainless steel cases and bracelets, this is the only one to add precious metals. The Yachtmaster has the same functionality as the Submariner except for the water resistance. It does have polished center links, and coupled with the platinum bezel and dial, make it look much more blingy. But at heart it is still a tool watch, meant to be banged around and worn.
As you can see, unless you know a little bit about these watches it is hard to tell the difference between them. But they are all very different models when you dig deep. At first you might confuse a GMT with an explorer or a Submariner with a Yachtmaster. But after studying Rolex Boca Raton watches for a little while you will be able to tell the difference.
